Hasan Umut

Hasan Umut is an Assistant Professor in the History Department at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. He received his BSc in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University and his MA in History from Istanbul Bilgi University. He obtained his PhD in Islamic Studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, with a dissertation titled "Theoretical Astronomy in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire: ʿAlī al-Qūshjī's Al-Risālaal-Fatiyya." His research interests include the history of astronomy, history of science in Islamic societies, Ottoman science, and the historiography of science. His latest article, "Navigating Historiographical Boundaries in the Early Turkish Republican Period: Astrology, Nationalism, and Aydın Sayılı's Scholarship," was published in Notes and Records: The Royal Society Journal of the History of Science. He is currently co-editing a volume on the scientific contributions of Qub al-Dīnal-Shīrāzī, a prominent scholar who flourished in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
